Substance, 2013-...

Substance (2013-...) is an ongoing night photography project around open-pit surface mining of lignite. Coal is transported from the mines via conveyor systems and railroad transport to powerstations for steam-electric power generation. Mine expansion requires relocating entire villages, rebuilding infrastructures, clearing forests and transformation of landscapes. Substance is a work in progress the coming years, until mines are closed, powerstations shut down and landscapes recultivated. This project is however not intended as documentary, its focus lies mainly on the continuous stream of processes during the night.
